2009 Area Football Report
Local high school football players have verbally committed to Southeastern Colleges. Murphy wide receiver Solomon Patton committed to Florida, Blount safety Jarrick Williams committed to Alabama, Daphne's David Fowler committed to Southern Miss and Baker's Blaine Clausell committed to Mississippi State.
Ladd-Peebles Stadium has completed renovations and skyboxes are for sale. There is a questionable future of the Senior Bowl because it still does not have a contract with Mobile.
It is a shame that there is a conflict with the kickoff times of the South Alabama football games in its inaugural season. It will be a learning curve for people that really want to support the Jaguars because College Football in Alabama is a huge weekend event for local football fans. Mobile will have to find a way to make it work.
Former McGill-Toolen and LSU cornerback Phelon Jones transferred to Alabama before this season. Jones started two games last year and played extensively in the LSU Tigers' nickel package, but said he wanted to transfer somewhere in-state where he would get more playing time. He will sit out the 2009 Bama season, with two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2010. Jones was the third-rated prospect in the state in the Press-Register's 2007 Elite 18 list of in-state prospects, and was the 10th-rated cornerback in the country that year according to Rivals.com.
Dustin and Jordin Lindsey are twin brothers that dominated on defense at Davidson before signing with the South Carolina Gamecocks in 2004. Dustin was a linebacker that recorded 15 tackles in his senior season in 2008 after suffering a knee injury in 2007. He was redshirted in 2006 after recording 58 tackles in 2005, including 35 in the four games he started. Jordin was a defensive end that totaled 31 tackles with an interception and blocked kick in his senior season in 2008 after taking a redshirt season in 2007. He played in all 13 games and logged 37 tackles, including 29 solo stops in 2006 and capped off the season by being named Carolina's Outstanding Defensive Player in the Liberty Bowl when he had a pass interception and recovered a fumble. He recorded 29 tackles in 2005.
High School Pre-Season Rankings
6A Davidson #3 (11-3), Daphne #9 (7-4)
5A Vigor #1 (15-0)
4A UMS-Wright #1 (13-2)
McGill-Toolen’s Mike Dean served as the Yellow Jackets’ defensive coordinator under Steve Savarese and Keith Powell before taking the head coaching job at Daleville and leading them to the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season. He is back where he belongs living in the house that he never sold. “It was a leap of faith to take the Daleville job and an act of God to come back home,” Dean said. The Jackets have 108 players on the roster and Dean plans to reload rather than rebuild.
UMS-Wright’s Terry Curtis has posted a career record of 195-58. After winning the 4A state championship last season, his Bulldogs are looking for a fifth state title in this decade. “We will be the hunted this season and not the hunter,” Curtis said.
6A Region 1 - Murphy Panthers, Davidson Warriors, Theodore Bobcats, Blount Leopards, Williamson Lions, Bryant Hurricanes, Mary Montgomery Vikings, Baker Hornets.
Murphy – Ronn Lee begins his seventh year at Murphy. The Panthers finished 10-3 in 2008 and are led by Florida commitment Solomon Patton at wide receiver. Harlos Brand and Will Gholston are other targets for quarterback Daniel Woodyard.
Davidson – Fred Riley is in his sixth year at Davidson. The No. 3 ranked Warriors are expected to throw more with quarterback Jarrell Smith. The defense will be strong under the direction of defensive coordinator Danny Smith.
Theodore – Bill Meredith starts his seventh season at Theodore. The Bobcats are led by heavily recruited linebacker C. J. Mosley on defense and quarterback Chris Nelson on offense. Other athletes to watch are Greg Conner, Todd Neal and Brandon Kiser.
Blount – Kelvin Sigler begins his second season at Blount. The Leopards are led by Alabama commitment Jarrick Williams, quarterback Calvin Davison and freshman quarterback Quinterris Toppings may get a chance.
Williamson – Bobby Parrish has led the Williamson for 10 years and missed the playoffs last year for the first time. Barry James and Gaither Madison lead the defense for the Lions.
Bryant - Ronnie Cottrell returns for his second season at Bryant. Quarterback Ricky LaForce will lead the offense although the team lacks experience.
Mary Montgomery – Scott Lesley is back for his eleventh season for MGM. The Vikings lack a big play athlete and must find a way to put more points on the board.
Baker – Tim Massengale was winless at Baker last season. Mississippi State commitment Blaine Clausell expects to protect experienced quarterback Jordan Patterson for the Hornets, which field 14 returning starters.
6A Region 2 – McGill-Toolen, Daphne, Foley, Fairhope, Satsuma, Baldwin County, Robertsdale.
McGill-Toolen – Mike Dean starts his first year for the Yellow Jackets. Dean takes over a program that was 33-6 under Steve Savarese and Keith Powell with three Region Championships. Quarterback Preston Messer leads the offense and Cory Wiggins carries the defense.
Daphne – Glenn Vickery leads the Trojans. Israel Lamprakes and Darius Baker lead the offense while the defense lost everybody.
Foley – Todd Watson has the Lions still roaring even without superstars like Julio Jones and D. J. Fluker while the defense is lacks experience.
Fairhope – David Faulkner begins his first season for the Pirates. Daryl Norris and Jamal Woodyard will be in the headlines every week.
Satsuma – Lonnie Rawlins has the Gators ready with 5 returning starters on each side of the ball. Daniel Manning is ready to tote the pigskin.
Baldwin County - David Wofford leads the Tigers that have three experienced running backs and 10 returning starters.
Robertsdale - Scott Phelps leads the Bears with 27 seniors and 13 returning starters that hope to improve after struggling the last four seasons.
5A Region 1 – Vigor, Spanish Fort, Citronelle, Gulf Shores, St. Paul’s, Faith Academy, Escambia County, LeFlore.
Vigor - Kerry Stevenson’s Wolves will win many more games with Marvin Shinn crossing the goal line many more times and 330-pound Quinterrius Eatmon opening up many more holes on the front line.
Spanish Fort - Bryant Vincent is looking forward to the Toros playing its first game at home after 33 straight games on the road. Running back Elijah Peters paces the offense while the defense is the strength.
Citronelle - Jeremy Sullivan begins his first season with the Wildcats. Defense is strong but have young players in key positions.
Gulf Shores – Mark Freeman brings a winning tradition in his first year with the Dolphins. Accountability and conditioning are the biggest questions.
St. Paul’s - Jimmy Perry has his work cut out in his first season for the Saints, who dresses just 50 players. Another rebuilding year with lack of depth is in store with hope to progress each week.
Faith Academy - Gary Caldwell leads the Rams in his first season. The offense will run the ball and get better with a good attitude and work ethic.
Escambia County - Kyle Davis is a veteran coach for the Blue Devils with an offense that revolves around multi-talented quarterback Rico Stallworth.
LeFlore – Chris Raymond leads the Rattlers who are faster and stronger with 18 returning starters.
4A Region 1 – UMS-Wright, Jackson, Thomasville, Clark County, B.C. Rain, Hillcrest-Evergreen, Andalusia, W. S. Neal
UMS-Wright – Terry Curtis has experienced talent returning for the Bulldogs. Running back Chris Dukes, quarterback Bragg Foshee and linebacker Nick Laskey are the top dogs.
Jackson – Jeff Kelly has the Aggies moving in the right direction with a lot of senior leadership.
B. C. Rain – Eric Scott thinks speed and athleticism are the strong points for the Red Raiders.
3A Region 1 – T. R. Miller, Luverne, Straughn, Bayside Academy, Cottage Hill Christian, Choctaw County, Calhoun, Central-Hayneville.
T. R. Miller – Jamie Riggs has won four state titles for the Tigers so a 13 win season win last season was no surprise. Look for more of the same this year.
Bayside Academy – Phil Lazenby took the Admirals to the playoffs for the first time last season and is building it up again with just 33 players.
Cottage Hill Christian - Rusty Mason begins his first year for the Warriors and he has a lot of young players in key spots.
2A Region 1 – Leroy, Millry, Flomaton, Washington County, Excel, Red Level, Southern Choctaw, Mobile Christian.
Mobile Christian – Tommy Wasden has a tough job with the Leopards in a strong Region. Junior quarterback Jonathan Redd will continue to get better as team leader with just 27 teammates.
1A Region 1 – Sweet Water, J. U. Blacksher, McIntosh, McIntosh, Marengo, Georgiana, Fruitdale, Frisco City, Coffeeville, J. F. Shields
