Youth Involvement

Abe Phillips has been inactive in his later years after being deeply involved as a coach and in administration in the youth sports community for many years. Phillips was the President of the Springhill-Forest Hill Youth Football Association, which eventually became the Youth Football Program at Municipal Park.  He is the co-founder and first president of the Mobile Youth Football Conference (MYFC).   Phillips served as the President of the South Alabama Dixie Youth (13-14 year olds) Baseball Program on the University of South Alabama Campus.   The league was played on an intramural field next to the former Jaguar Field, where the USA baseball team built its National reputation under legendary coach Eddie Stanky.   Today, the Mitchell Center sits on top of the grounds where the fields laid until the late the early eighties.  Phillips was the President of Springhill Little League at Municipal Park before the switch was made to Dixie Youth.  As a coach, Phillips has memories of mentoring young athletes in football and baseball at Municipal Park.  He was on the coaching staff of Bobby Jackson and Will McRaney, which won the midget division Inaugural MYFC Youth Bowl Championship at Trimmier Park in 1972. Phillips admits that he loved every minute that he spent for the sake of all the athletes that he was part of as they grew up in youth sports.
